Just some random house pics

He's not dead, he's restin'.....

We are taking a day off.

It's a long weekend, all of the still-full boxes are stashed in the second bedroom, and we have everything we really need to cook, clean, and do laundry. There's no reason we shouldn't give ourselves a day off.

99% of our stuff is here. There are some pictures, and the glass top for my desk, and the vacuum that are still at the apartment.

We will go over there tomorrow, take the bucket and the cleaning products. We will load that left over stuff into the cars, clean the place, take out the piles of trash, take out the vacuum bag after one last run over the carpet, and be done with it.

Rent gets turned in Wednesday. Yes, rent. We still have to pay June rent, God dammit....and then, we turn in the keys on 6/15.

The mail is SUPPOSED to stop being delivered there next Wed., too, but they have screwed so many things up already, I am not entirely confident that they will do it.

They were putting "vacant" notices in the apartment mail box and sending our mail back a couple of weeks ago. When Dave went to the post office to ask them why, they showed him that we had submitted a change of address request.

He pointed out that the effective date we gave on the request form was JUNE 1, not May 15. Idiots.

So, they seem to have fixed it, and we have been getting the mail out of the box there for the past week....so far, they've been doing it right since he went and talked to them....but, like I said, I am not confident that when June 1 comes, they will enact the official change.....just because they are apparently MORONS.

It's been very hot for a couple of days (oh, and all was well in our part of Oklahoma with those storms last week). Too hot to do anything outside....we'll have hotdogs and potato salad for dinner tonight, but everything will be cooked inside.

We don't have our grill yet. It's still in Dave's parents' garage from when the apartments outlawed grills.

Hope everyone's having a good holiday weekend. I heard it's been nothing but rain back home.

Mostly moved!

We moved our bodies and pets over the weekend (most importantly, the bed...that made it official that we had moved in!), and much of our stuff.....it was utter chaos to move before we had planned to, so there is still stuff in kitchen cabinets and closets at the apartment.

I didn't get that last week to pack things and clean them before moving them, so it was not an ideal situation, but I am so glad to be in the house!

I took a vacation day on Monday, which was very fortunate, because the weekend was utterly exhausting.

But Monday was exhausting, too, because I stayed home and unpacked/nested all day, and then moved stuff Monday night with Dave and my friend Johnny from work.

Johnny has a pick up truck, and he has been helping us a lot. He helped bring over three or four truck loads before we moved in, he was available Saturday for the big move day, but Dave's son was so late that Johnny ran out of time before he got to do anything.

Then, Monday night, he did 2 truck loads for us, and helped me get my clothes over here before I had to go back to work Tuesday.

He will help us one last time tomorrow night, and anything we don't get out of the apartment tomorrow will be gotten over the weekend just with our cars.

Then, also over the holiday weekend, we will get in there and clean. Our official change of address with the post office is next Tuesday, June 1, but we are locked into the lease until 6/15.

We will give them the keys on 6/15, and by then the place will be fully emptied out and spotless.

Jack the cat has started to settle down. He was pretty freaked out for the first couple of days, hiding under the bed or IN the bed, under the covers, not eating or drinking. That's improving.

Nichi the 25 year old cockatiel is doing fine, as he always does. He flew into the bedroom today, and landed in the middle of the bed. That was pretty funny.

We love this house, and I personally can't wait til all of the chaos is over, and all of the boxes are emptied and gone. Then I will finally be able to relax.

Change of plans for the change of venue!

Because we reported the upstairs neighbors for the fifth time for being disruptive in the middle of the night, they keyed my car. Two lovely scratches on the driver side...one on the door that was just replaced in April.

Then, tonight, water started leaking through our ceiling from their apartment.

According to the maintenance emergency guy, it's their air conditioner unit's condensation line that's leaking.

We have water in a light fixture, and coming through our smoke detector. And maintenance has instructed them to turn OFF their a/c for the night and open their windows.

It's a torrential down pour storm tonight, so....divine justice??

Anyway, these events have made Dave suddenly aware of how crappy it is that we have to live here while we have the cutest house in town to move to in just over a week.....so......we're not waiting.

My step son and his strong buddies are coming the day after tomorrow to get the big items we can't move ourselves, and we will change residence officially on Saturday. NOT Saturday the 28th, but Saturday the 21st.

We are still technically the lessors of this apartment until June 15, so whatever small stuff we don't get moved can get moved before then by the car load.

I had HOPED to keep to our plan, but after today, I think I'm pretty much ready too.

Exhausted

Exhaustion has set in, along with the feeling of being overwhelmed by how much we still have to do over the next 2 weeks.

We did errands and painting yesterday, getting the groceries at the end of the day, then coming home and cooking dinner. Then we packed more boxes.

This morning, when we got up, I felt really sick, so I stayed home while Dave took a car load of boxes over to the house and starting back on painting.

I rested for about a half hour, had some unpleasant digestive experiences, then felt better.

I did some laundry, and packed 3 or 4 more boxes. Then I really started to feel better, so I got in the car and went over to the house.

We made another trip to Lowes, grabbed some lunch, then back to the house.

I painted for a couple of hours, until I had done all I could do (I don't do ladders, so the hallway has been my project this weekend, and it's got 2 coats on it now up to about 6 feet).

I came home, took a walk to get the mail, and am now going to rest a little. I don't need to get sick now with only 2 weeks to go, and SO very much to do.

So far, the living room, bathroom, and breakfast nook are completely finished. Dave says that by the end of today, the rest of the kitchen will be finished, too.

The hallway is about half way, since the ceiling is still the color of doom, and so is the top 2 feet of walls.

We still have to do the dining room, bedroom, and second bedroom. Not gonna happen before we move. This turned into a much bigger project for 2 aging people than we anticipated.

Having a little help for one day last weekend only actually reduced our job by about 3 hours. It was nice to have the company, but it didn't really make a dent in the work.

Sigh....

Transformation

now....with a burgundy accent wall

then....muddy mossy color of doom

now.....it's called butter!!

then.....again, with the color of doom....

We have spent two weekends painting now. It has been exhausting. The color that was up on the walls and ceiling has been very difficult to cover, thus my giving it the name color of doom.

Why they put it on the ceilings is a complete mystery, but some have said that sort of thing is "trendy."

And, I personally LIKE to have different colors in different areas of a home. This dark muddy baby poo color is the same in every room.

So, our many hours of work have transformed a lot.

The bathroom is now a gorgeous seafoam green, with a pale lavender ceiling. The kitchen/breakfast nook walls AND the ceiling are 85% done, in that lovely "butter" shade, and eventually, the little hallway will be the same color as the living room, with white ceiling, and the dining room and master bedroom will be a couple of shades darker than that, and the office/guest room will be a soft pale green-- all with white ceilings.

The bedroom will have an accent colored wall, too, in a soft shade of ashy purple.

The living room looks gorgeous....so much bigger, brighter, and more open looking, and the parts of the kitchen that are done are soooo pretty!

It has been very tiring, and with my dance class now taking up Tuesday AND Wednesday nights, I have not had much down time (sorry I forgot to call you back, seeeester!).

Dave will go throw another coat of burgundy on the living room accent wall, and touch up the corners in the bathroom as this week goes by, and he has also taken every Friday off this month to spend painting.

We are determined to get it all done before we move in the rest of our stuff.

Can't wait til this is all done and overwith, and the nesting can begin!

Oh, and after a grueling day of painting yesterday, I took my first bubble bath in that beautiful tub! What a treat!

Brushes, and rollers, and drop cloths, OH MY!

The closing went fine, and the house is ours!

We have spent almost this entire weekend painting. The dark color of doom is HELL to cover. Even after a coat of primer, it appears that it is going to take three coats of the color to get it thick enough to subdue that dark, icky background. That crap might as well have been black!

We'll see. It's hard to say before the new paint is completely dry, and it was raining today, so drying takes longer.

I am planning to make my bathroom a shrine to the water spirits again, like in my first house. The woodwork is already done, and it's a luscious aqua. (it was white, so it was easier to cover with color)
The walls will be seafoam green, and the ceiling will be pale lavender. I am hoping to find stencil kits somewhere... I don't know if anyone does that anymore...of sea shells.

We are considering two coats of primer on the rest of the house, since we have learned the hard way in the living room (which is, of course, the biggest area that needed painting) that one may not be enough.

I am also realizing that it was probably 10 years ago the last time I took part in the painting of an entire house. While I have done it many times, the last time was when I was still in my 30's.

As of a couple of days ago, I am 49.

It makes a difference. Even my feet hurt from standing all day, and spending part of the day on the rung of a ladder. My right hand and arm hurt the most from gripping a brush.

Ow. My right hand hurt so much last night it woke me.

But, in the long run, it will be well worth the work. The color that's in there now is just so ugly, and our choices will make it SO much brighter and cheerier!!

The color we found for the kitchen is called "BUTTER!" Hah!

We're doing an accent wall in the living room and the bedroom. Dave's idea. That ought to give it a lot of spark, too.

Wish us luck as we continue this HUGE project on our own....(Dave's son has refused to help, which is his right...so it's just us....and it's a lot of work)
