(mock fireplaces are very common in old houses down here-that was where they put one of their ceramic gas heaters, before there was central heat)

The final walk through was yesterday, so we were able to get in and take some pictures of the house while it is still vacant. Unfortunately, it was a gloomy day, so some of the shots taken with my phone look sort of crappy. Remember, you can click on any image to see a larger view of it.
I really don't like the colors inside the house. They're too dark, and they painted the ceilings the same colors as the walls...so it's like a cave in there on a cloudy day.
The lawn mower that was promised was not there, so our realtor is looking into why that is. He is not, however, looking into the other oddities.
Apparently, things in Yokelhomie are MUCH different than back in Illinois when it comes to home sales.
Back home, EVERY DETAIL is written into the contract, and then lawyers on both sides review and agree after any changes.
For example, the seller says clearly in the contract "I am leaving the lawn mower, but taking all of the rods out of the closets. I am leaving the ceiling fans, but taking all of the curtains."
(those are, by the way, the oddities mentioned above)
I asked Dave why we have not seen the contract yet, expecting that all of the stuff we negotiated would be written into it. He said "It's right there," and pointed to a document on the couch which is NOT what I have seen before as a home sales contract.
None of those details are present.
Anyway, then yesterday, while we were with the realtor, I asked..."SO, we don't have an attorney. Do you bring one? We have not talked about that, and it's getting late!"
He just stared at me, looked at Dave, looked back at me.
There are no attorneys involved in home sales in this state. He'd never heard of it before.
Okay then, so, you apparently take your chances with unpleasant surprises like the ones we found yesterday.
Fortunately, they were not HUGE expensive surprises, like she took the fridge and stove. It's just closet rods, curtains, and a lawn mower.
Aside from that, all looks in good order!
We went out and got a cheap hard wired phone for the land line we are having installed. Found one for $15 at Best Buy!
Then we went to Home Depot and looked at paint colors. The ceilings HAVE to be white, if you ask me, and I am in charge of decorating decisions, so.....the ceilings WILL be white! And I would much prefer a lighter, more neutral color for the majority of the walls.
The living room/hall/master bed are all that dark, olive drab color. The dining room and kitchen are a lighter color, but still sort of ugly. I want a yellow kitchen, and will MAYBE leave the dining room as is if the white ceiling improves the darkness enough.
Sigh...much work to be done over the course of May....
